Please join me in celebrating the month of December in a very different way this year. We all remember the advent calendars we had as children with the little windows that opened. The Jewish faith celebrates the eight days of Hanukkah or the Festival of Lights. Even people of non-Christian faiths participate in much of the peripheral celebration of the holiday season. The real countdown, however, has become more about the decorating of the tree and the house and the yard and the office………, purchasing the gifts, wrapping of the gifts, sending out holiday gifts and greetings and all of the special parties, food and other celebrations along the way.
All of these events and activities are great fun but December can be one of the most stressful months for many people. When January 1st rolls around we have had fun, eaten too much , spent too much and we begin to go through withdrawal from all of the energy (positive or negative) that the previous “season” provided. In Indiana we are also entering a time of limited outdoor activity and sunlight which causes many of us to suffer from seasonal depression.
I would like to take a different approach this year. Why not take a little time each day during the month of December to reflect and prepare the way for the New Year! Let’s not wait until we are over-tired, over-stuffed and under-funded to start thinking about how we can “make straight our path”. Follow this advent calendar with me each day and comment or journal on your own. On January 1st we will set our resolutions and intentions for the new year out into the universe having prepared our hearts and minds for change. We will have given ourselves time to come up with viable solutions from our own inner genius that will work for us.
I am really looking forward to arriving at January 1, 2012 prepared, ready for the journey and excited to embrace change and new possibilities. Please join me!
