My favorite holidays are Thanksgiving and New Years because they are NO-GIFT REQUIRED celebrations. I am a terrible gift giver. I don’t like to shop, I don’t like to ask people what they want because I want the gift to be a surprise and I don’t like to purchase gift cards.
When I would buy gifts for the kids, I always thought there had to be an educational value. When I buy clothes or regular everyday items it is because “they need new socks”! The controlling questions in this dilemma are: How could this person benefit from this gift? How do I want them to benefit from this gift? They really should want this and love it after all!
I allow the entire gift giving scenario to completely take any possible joy out of the giving!
My purpose in giving a gift is what I struggle with the most. What meaning does the gift have? How will the gift reflect my knowledge of the persons likes and dislikes? When is it ok to re-gift, or is it ever ok? How do you place a price on this relationship? Where could I get this same thing for less money!? (The gift, not the relationship!)
I NEED HELP!
On a deeper level, I want to share with you this quote:
“Only what you are not giving can be lacking in any situation.” — A COURSE IN MIRACLES
What am I withholding from any relationship or situation I find myself in? LOVE!
That was easy! I’ll try giving that everyday in 2012!
